The origin of these sports come from the work with the cattle on the ranches. In the fifties the rules and practice of theses activities did develop as sport and family leisure. Team Penning, Cattle Penning, Team Sorting and Ranch Sorting are the fastest growing equine sports in North America. The same interest is now reaching Europe since a few years back. In Team Penning, a team of three riders has to cut out from the herd, three designated head of cattle, recognisable by a same sign, number or colour and to pen the three heads on the other side of the arena as quick as possible. The winning team is the one that has penned all three designated head of cattle in the shortest time. Cattle Penning is similar to Team Penning, apart from the fact that it involves just one rider who has to pen one designated head of cattle. In Team Sorting ( also known as Open Arena Sorting), a team of two or three riders have to separate ten head of cattle, numbered from 0 through 9 among a herd of 12 heads in a given order starting from the one announced by the judge. I.e. Number 5 is announced, the team has to cut out the head identified with the number 5, consequently the cow with number 6, then 7, 8,9,0,1,…The winning team will be the one that has sorted out the maximum number of heads on the other side of the arena and foul line by respecting the given order as quick as possible and within the time limit. Finally Ranch Sorting is similar to Team sorting except that it is executed between to opposing pens of roughly same size with the opening in the centre (looks like an eight). The pen opening represents the foul line.
